Case Study: A Charge Capture Implementation Success Story

One of the most respected names in cancer research and treatment, Memorial Sloan Kettering (MSK), spoke recently of its partnership with one of the most respected names in healthcare IT.

Jane Yee, MSK’s manager of revenue systems strategy, told an audience at GE Centricity LIVE 2016 about her organization’s adoption of PatientKeeper Charge Capture and the impact the system has had on MSK’s outpatient billing operations. According to Yee, two years ago MSK’s traditional paper-based physician charge entry process was running up against serious obstacles – revenue pressure, administrative inefficiency, and coding complexity (a function of ICD-10) – that affected providers, billers and coders. A new electronic solution was needed; priorities for it were to:

  • reduce the opportunity for and frequency of incomplete charges,
  • maximize transfer of required information through electronic interfaces, and
  • eliminate administrative staff involvement without increasing providers’ workload… which meant system usability for physicians was a key – the fewer mouse clicks, the better.

Since deploying PatientKeeper Charge Capture last year (ahead of the ICD-10 cutover) to more than 600 providers across multiple MSK locations, Yee said both claim lag and posting lag days have dropped nearly 50 percent. Charge entry errors and paper consumption are way down and, perhaps most importantly, the transition to ICD-10 went smoothly. In fact, PatientKeeper has been so well received at MSK that they’ve decided to extend the system to inpatient billing as well.

All in all, a big win for an organization with a long history of helping its patients win.
