Leading by Example

We expect physicians to influence their patients’ medical choices and health behaviors. Now it turns out doctors also influence their patients’ technology behavior.

In a recent survey of 2,000 patients and caregivers, patients whose doctor used a mobile device in the exam room were 30 to 50 percent more likely to use their own mobile devices in the doctor’s office or pharmacy. One hundred percent of those accessing a mobile device in the exam room said that they would use an app, if recommended by their physician.

This is further evidence that physicians are not luddites – a misconception fueled over the years by staunch physician resistance to applications like CPOE (which historically has been notoriously physician un-friendly) – but rather are eager adopters of technology that actually helps them do their jobs.

If only mainstream EMR vendors could learn that lesson.
