Kudos to the Fog Cutter

A PatientKeeper colleague has done a fabulous job cutting through the fog that seems to have descended over the healthcare industry around Stage 2 meaningful use timing. His blog post – aptly entitled, “When a Delay is Not a Delay – The Impact on Meaningful Use Stage 2” – makes clear that only a small handful of hospitals (a few dozen Stage 1 “early attesters”) will get a 12-month “reprieve” on their Stage 2 timeline (if the ONC adopts the recent HITPC recommendation, which seems very likely). The rest of America’s 5,000 hospitals are exactly where they have been all along: Stage 2 kicks off on Oct. 1, 2013.

Regardless of the timing confusion, it’s increasingly apparent that Stage 2 will be all about physician adoption of healthcare IT. And, ultimately, that’s what will drive better patient outcomes and reduced healthcare costs, which is what HITECH really seeks to accomplish.
