Does Airline Deregulation Offer a Lesson for Healthcare IT?

In 2009, Congress passed the HITECH Act. While the government accomplished what it asked for explicitly -- that physicians use computers – it has not achieved what it set out to do: to have computers improve the cost and quality of healthcare in the U.S.  This is not something the can easily be regulated. In fact, we see time and again how difficult it is to innovate in a highly regulated environment. Google isn’t one of the most valuable companies in the world because the government decided to regulate internet search.

But we’re regulated now in healthcare. Which begs the question: what might healthcare look like if the government took a different approach?
