AlertKeeper, part of PatientKeeper Enterprise, is an automated handheld messaging application that allows users to receive important information about their patients during the course of the workday.
Types of Alerts
Any PatientKeeper application can generate an alert and pass it to you via the Mobile Patient Index and Mobilizer server. The alerts may be general, or target a specific patient. An example of a general alert is a warning for a low battery life. An example of a patient-specific alert might be for an abnormal or critical lab value from LabKeeper. Your IT administrator defines which events generate alerts for each application.
Alert Urgency
Alerts have a level of urgency from 1 to "n", where 1 is the most urgent and "n" is determined by the IT administrator. By convention, an urgency level of 1 is reserved for alerts that require immediate action, as these are the most intrusive to your workflow.
Receiving Alerts
When you synchronize your handheld you'll know if you have messages because the AlertKeeper icon on the Mobile Patient Index (mPI) main screen is highlighted, along with an exclamation point appearing next to the patient's name. Old alerts that have not been viewed will also be present. The alerts are ranked by urgency with the value of 1 being at the top.
Viewing Alerts
You have to view all level 1 alerts before you work in any other PatientKeeper application (you can "snooze" the others - see below). This gives you flexibility in handling the most critical matters immediately. To view details, just tap on the alert and the full text is displayed along with the title, urgency, PatientKeeper application, and patient name if applicable. Save or delete the detail as needed. Once details are deleted they are erased from the handheld. Choosing to save the alert means that it stays on the alert list and its status changes to "viewed."
Audit Trails
PatientKeeper's Mobile Patient Index logs when a user views an alert. That way, an administrator can track whether a user has viewed alerts.
"Snoozing"
AlertKeeper is designed so that you must answer level 1 alerts before moving into other PatientKeeper functions. However, it is possible to "snooze" the alert list and use PatientKeeper applications for a specified amount of time prior before being notified that there are still alerts that have to be dealt with. The user sets the snooze time.
