CPOE: Computerized Physician Order Entry
Designed for Meaningful Physician Use

Order Entry with Physician Adoption Built In

Historically, CPOE has been a major hurdle for hospitals. Barely one-third of hospitals have CPOE systems, and fewer than 10% of physicians are actually using it to enter orders. Yet, CPOE is a fundamental requirement of the HITECH Act. Without it, hospitals will not qualify for HITECH Stimulus Incentives.

PatientKeeper CPOE was designed based on Physician Workflow, so it is quickly and easily adopted by physicians. They are able to translate all of the things they normally do throughout the day -- ordering labs, radiology, meds, etc. -- into a seamless system that connects all of the appropriate departments within the hospital and healthcare community. Other order-entry systems focus on the way the departments receive data, instead of how orders are entered. We design with the physician in mind.

Saving Physicians Time, Improving Communication and Accuracy

PatientKeeper CPOE saves physicians time throughout the day by making it easy for them to place orders with just a few clicks. Physicians can customize their order sets to accommodate their specialties, which speeds up the ordering process even more. And since the orders are entered electronically, there is no opportunity for misunderstanding, as there is with verbal orders, which improves communication between the physician and department staff, and the accuracy of the testing, meds or follow-up being requested.

Physicians truly benefit from the many features of the CPOE system:

  • Order sets tailored to individual physicians –
PatientKeeper CPOE allows physicians to personalize order sets, incorporating evidence-based orders as appropriate over time.
  • Integration with Existing Department Systems –
Since PatientKeeper CPOE exists as a layer on top of a hospital's current IT infrastructure, it seamlessly integrates and communicates with existing systems, eliminating the need to "rip and replace" installed departmental systems.
  • Expertise of Other Clinicians –
CPOE does not seek to replace the expertise of other clinicians (e.g. clinical pharmacologists, nurses and pharmacists) who perform valuable roles. Only the most critical decision support alerts are presented to the physician.
  • Simultaneous Use of Handheld and Desktop Platforms –
Our system offers physicians the option of using a smartphone or other handheld device, as well as laptop, desktop or tablet computers, to quickly and easily enter orders with a few taps of the screen or keyboard.
  • Hybrid Paper and Electronic Processes –
Physicians can easily transition to CPOE, without any changes to their workflow. Capabilities can be extended as new departments come online, so there is no need to wait for an all-or-nothing solution. This approach greatly accelerates the path to Meaningful Use.

An Ideal Extension for Healthcare IT

PatientKeeper CPOE allows healthcare institutions to streamline the ordering process without disrupting their existing IT infrastructure. CPOE is a part of the PatientKeeper suite of clinical applications that is built on an extensible platform; other PatientKeeper applications can easily be added to connect the healthcare community with access to referring physicians, ambulatory order entry, remote access to clinical results, and the ability to electronically capture charges.
