VCU Health System Deploys Patientkeeper as Its
Physician Information System
Physicians Embrace PatientKeeper As an
Important Tool to Save Time and Enhance Patent Care
Boston, Mass. and Richmond, Va. – October 31, 2006
– PatientKeeper®, Inc. and the Virginia Commonwealth
University Health System (VCUHS), announced today that VCUHS has
deployed PatientKeeper as its physician information system.
Recognized in the past as one of the “Most Wired”
healthcare institutions in the United States by Hospitals &
Health Networks, VCU Health System now provides its physicians
with a broad range of applications from PatientKeeper that
interoperate and integrate with its existing Cerner and GE/IDX
systems. The initiative was spearheaded and funded by MCV
Physicians, a 600-physician, faculty group practice that is part
of the VCU Health System organization.
“PatientKeeper is the first software that physicians
actually get excited about because it saves them time and
enhances patient care,” said Alistair Erskine, chief
medical information officer of VCU Health System. “The
enthusiasm of VCUHS physicians to use PatientKeeper helps ensure
that the entire organization realizes the financial and clinical
benefits of the system. Moreover, VCUHS anticipates leveraging
PatientKeeper’s track record of innovation for our future
needs.”
Only PatientKeeper is designed to support a physician
throughout the entire day, across all settings of care.
PatientKeeper’s applications allow physicians to access
their patients’ electronic records, write prescriptions,
enter charges for services, document patient encounters, and
securely send messages to other caregivers – all in a
single, integrated environment. PatientKeeper supports any tablet
or PC running a Web browser as well as Palm OS® and Windows
Mobile® devices. Physicians at VCU Health System and MCV
Physicians will use:
- PatientKeeper Physician Portal™ to see a comprehensive
view of a patient’s entire medical history from any Web
browser
- PatientKeeper Mobile Clinical Results™ to access
patient information – anytime, anywhere with PDAs and
Smartphones
- PatientKeeper Charge Capture™ to quickly and easily
record charges for services they deliver – at the point of
care, in the office, or anywhere in between
“With PatientKeeper, VCU Health System now provides
improved access to patient data and other clinical information at
less cost than what it would to outfit the organization with
permanent workstations just to view labs. Mobile applications are
more cost effective and provides our physicians with better
access to patient information, from lab results to past medical
histories and medications,” continued Erskine.
VCUHS selected PatientKeeper because of its vast experience
with other academic medical centers, proven return on investment
from PatientKeeper Charge Capture, and the company’s
ability to integrate with disparate information systems.
Aggregating patient data in a standardized, interoperable format
is consistent with VCUHS’ vision of a regional data
exchange. PatientKeeper’s Portal and Mobile Clinical
Results applications allow VCUHS physicians to choose the form
factor that works best for their own unique workflows without
having to change their methods of providing care, whether they
are at the patient bedside, in the office, or anywhere in
between. PatientKeeper will also serve as a part of business
continuation (downtime) plan for VCUHS’ Cerner system by
combining direct integration to Cerner with a separate
repository.
“By enabling physicians inside and outside of VCU Health
System to access up-to-the-minute patient information,
PatientKeeper effectively arms these providers with the data they
need to provide the best care to the community,” said Paul
W. Brient, president and CEO of PatientKeeper, Inc.
“PatientKeeper looks forward to continuing to work with VCU
Health System and MCV Physicians to support the
organizations’ mission of providing the most advanced and
state-of-the-art treatments using the best technologies
available.”
PatientKeeper’s physician information system has
consistently garnered increased market share because of its
innovative, integrated applications. PatientKeeper is also
integrated to all major hospital information systems and
electronic medial records (EMRs), including Cerner, Eclipsys,
Epic, GE Healthcare/IDX, McKesson, MEDITECH, QuadraMed, Siemens,
and others.
