PatientKeeper and ePocrates Deliver Patient Data and Clinical Decision Support Tools at the Point of Care

Clinicians Can Now Access ePocrates' Widely Used Drug Reference Applications via
the PatientKeeper Reference Library

BOSTON, MA and SAN MATEO, CA – August 17, 2004 – PatientKeeper® Inc., a leading provider of mobile computing solutions for healthcare, and ePocrates, the leading provider of mobile clinical reference applications, today announced that physicians and other healthcare professionals using the PatientKeeper Reference Library™ will now be able to access ePocrates drug reference applications while viewing a specific patient's information. The PatientKeeper Reference Library links patient information – such as medication lists, diagnosis code, lab panels, etc. – to the depth of knowledge available in clinical decision support tools through third parties.

"PatientKeeper and ePocrates are the recognized leaders in their respective fields, widely used by clinicians in a range of specialties and settings. Now, by directly linking patient information with the ePocrates references means more informed decisions and better patient care," said Deepak Khuntia, MD, University of Wisconsin Medical School.

With the PatientKeeper Reference Library, clinicians like Khuntia can access medical references within the context of a specific patient's relevant data quickly and conveniently from their mobile computer. For example, clinicians viewing a patient's active medication list will now be able to access ePocrates trusted and up-to-date drug monograph while in that specific list.

"The amount of drug reference information that physicians must keep track of continues to grow at an impressive rate," said Paul W. Brient, president and CEO at PatientKeeper. "Our partnership with ePocrates is important because of its popularity with physicians. ePocrates provides one of the most respected and trusted drug references available."

With more than 350,000 healthcare professionals subscribing to its handheld applications, including 20 percent of practicing U.S. physicians, ePocrates has established itself as the leading provider of clinical reference information at the point of care, and is strengthening its position through partnerships with mobile technology providers such as PatientKeeper.

"When you combine ePocrates' best-in-class mobile clinical decision support tools that seamlessly integrate drug, disease and lab diagnostic references with the detailed patient-specific information delivered by PatientKeeper, physicians and other healthcare professionals truly have an all-in-one solution available where they need it most – right at the point of care," said ePocrates CEO Kirk Loevner.

In fact, results of a recent survey reported in the American Journal of Medicine suggest that PDA-based "software is effective in the identification of important drug-drug interactions and therefore has the potential to reduce the frequency of preventable adverse drug events," wrote the survey's authors Robert L. Robinson, MD, and Martha S. Buck, MD, of the Southern Illinois University School of Medicine.

The ePocrates Rx Pro drug reference application includes detailed information on more than 3,000 brand name and generic drugs, health plan formularies (list of covered drugs), the MultiCheck drug interaction tool, an infectious disease treatment guide, and embedded dosing and medical calculators.

The PatientKeeper Platform connects mobile devices with existing hospital information systems. Featuring an open architecture, it supports a broad and growing portfolio of mobile applications, including PatientKeeper Clinical Results™, PatientKeeper Charge Capture™, PatientKeeper Mobile Dictation™, PatientKeeper ePrescription™ (Powered by DrFirst), PatientKeeper Reference Library, and more.
