Hebrew Rehabilitation Center Increases Revenue with PatientKeeper Charge Capture

Wireless Application Increases Revenue, Produces More Accurate Bills, and Saves Time

BOSTON, Mass. - January 10, 2006 - PatientKeeper®, the leading provider of mobile applications for healthcare, today announced that Hebrew Rehabilitation Center, a major Boston-area research and academic hospital and part of Hebrew SeniorLife, reports significant benefits by using PatientKeeper Charge Capture™. More specifically, revenue has increased, billing accuracy has improved to well over 90 percent, charge lag time has been reduced to less than 24 hours, and efficiency has significantly increased. Moreover, the return on investment has exceeded the hospital's financial expectations.

PatientKeeper is the first mobile application for physicians, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants at Hebrew Rehabilitation Center that utilizes the recently installed wireless infrastructure. Instead of using paper forms, practitioners now use the PatientKeeper application to electronically capture and document charges and automatically verify accuracy and completeness.

"We see mobility as a critical component of our IT strategic plan. We evaluated many wireless applications before selecting PatientKeeper as the best solution," said Fran Hinckley, CIO of Hebrew SeniorLife. "With a proven track record of over six million charges successfully processed, we knew PatientKeeper would deliver demonstrable benefits in increasing revenue and billing accuracy and helping physicians save time. This implementation of PatientKeeper Charge Capture is a great case study on how to identify and exceed all ROI expectations."

Hebrew Rehabilitation Center's charge-capture process before PatientKeeper was slow and labor-intensive. Physicians would visit and assess a patient, and then use a three-part paper form to record their activities. The forms would then be delivered to the administrative staff for verification and processing. With PatientKeeper Charge Capture, this process was streamlined. On handheld devices, physicians select from personalized lists of professional services and procedures. The administrative staff no longer needs to transcribe the charges from paper or manually check for missing information. Rule checking appropriate to the practitioner's specialty helps ensure that accurate charges are captured and complete bills are produced. In addition, detailed charge reports help identify missing charges.

Functionality that is key to the success of the initiative includes:

  • Multiple layers of sophisticated rule checking - appropriately tailored for the physicians and the administrative staff
  • Personalizable picklists and rules to support a variety of specialties
  • Support for PDAs, Smart Phones, tablets, and desktop computers
  • Browser-based reporting and management tools for the administrative staff
  • Tight integration with the existing MEDITECH system

"We implemented PatientKeeper as part of a quality initiative to help billing be more efficient and effective," said Robert J. Schreiber, M.D., physician-in-chief, Hebrew SeniorLife. "PatientKeeper was intuitive, easily adaptable to our diverse settings, and quickly adopted by our doctors. Now, submitting charges and getting rounding lists are as easy as pushing the sync button. PatientKeeper has eliminated a lot of paperwork and saved physicians time, so they can do what they do best - care for our patients."

"The integration with our existing MEDITECH system is seamless," said Bob Shuman, vice president of business operations at Hebrew SeniorLife. "We were up and running in one month and are really pleased with the PatientKeeper software and team. The system will pay for itself in less than a year. Additionally, from a business perspective, PatientKeeper Charge Capture has given us the ability to better control the billing process."
