BOSTON, Feb. 10 - PRNewswire - PatientKeeper, healthcare's leading provider of mobile computing solutions that improve patient care and curb rising costs, today announced the election of Jeff Sutherland, Ph.D., PatientKeeper's chief technology officer, as co-chair of Health Level Seven's Orders and Observations Technical Committee. Health Level Seven (HL7) is an ANSI-accredited Standard Developing Organization (SDO) that addresses critical issues in healthcare information technology such as interoperability of disparate information systems and standardization that can improve care delivery and patient safety.
Specifically, HL7 provides standards for the exchange, management and integration of data that support clinical patient care and the management, delivery, and evaluation of healthcare services. With some of the country's most talented IT professionals as volunteer members, HL7 seeks to create flexible, cost effective approaches, standards, guidelines, methodologies, and related services for interoperability between healthcare information systems.
Members of HL7 are known collectively as the Working Group and are responsible for defining standard protocols that could ultimately redefine information technology support of healthcare delivery. Dr. Sutherland brings 20 years of product and technology development experience, as well as 18 years of experience in healthcare to his new role as a co-chair of HL7.
"Jeff Sutherland is a celebrated member of PatientKeeper's senior management team," commented Paul W. Brient, PatientKeeper's president and chief executive. "His distinguished career and his dedication will be a huge asset to HL7, and we are all proud of his recent election to the esteemed Orders and Observations Technical Committee."
Prior to joining PatientKeeper, Sutherland served as chief technology officer at IDX, the country's third-largest hospital information systems company, where he was responsible for setting the architectural direction for products across all business units. Sutherland also served as senior vice president of engineering and product development at IDX, where he directed a nationwide team of over 500 developers.
Sutherland received his master's in science degree in statistics and mathematics from Stanford University in Palo Alto, Calif., and his doctorate in biometrics, medical imaging and radiation physics from the University of Colorado School of Medicine in Denver, CO. Sutherland is also a distinguished graduate of the United States Military Academy whose early experiences in computing include reconnaissance planning as a USAF RF-4C pilot flying 100 combat missions.
His term with the HL7 Observations Technical Committee began on January 14, 2003 and runs for a period of two years.
