Boston, MA, October 22, 2001 - North Shore-Long Island Jewish Health System (North Shore-LIJ) reported today that it has awarded PatientKeeper² a multi-year contract to expand its services to over 300 physicians. PatientKeeper's Mobilizer² Platform will support the mobile computing needs of both Manhasset and Long Island campuses. This contract is valued at more than $1 million over the term of the contract.
North Shore-LIJ based the awarding of the contract on the results of an independent analysis by First Consulting Group (FCG), which demonstrated a 490% return on investment by using Mobilizer, PatientKeeper's Mobile Platform, and applications. PatientKeeper's PDA-based billing and compliance application, ChargeKeeper², captured 10% more inpatient charges, reduced hospital lag days by more than a week, and streamlined the previously paper-based process. Moreover, physicians reported increased satisfaction with the billing process.
"We feel that standardizing on PatientKeeper's mobile computing platform is a smart move for North Shore-LIJ," says Patrick Carney, CIO at North Shore-LIJ. "PatientKeeper's Mobilizer Platform is innovative technology and represents a key part of our wireless and mobile strategy."
Linda Hershon, Director of Clinical Practice Plan at North Shore-LIJ, said the FCG study showed that the health system achieved a 4.9:1 return on its investment, taking into consideration all related implementation, operational and support costs.
North Shore-LIJ and FCG performed the ROI study by monitoring a group of 86 physicians across 22 departments for a two-month period at North Shore's Manhasset campus. The FCG report documented a dramatic increase in inpatient charges captured. The analysis also revealed efficiency improvements that reduced the delay from performing the billable service to posting charges by eight days, which produced immediate cash benefits to North Shore. Other benefits of the ChargeKeeper application demonstrated by the study included:
"PatientKeeper is uniquely positioned to offer healthcare institutions an open platform that can support current and future mobile computing needs across an entire enterprise," says PatientKeeper CEO Gary F. Foster. "We help institutions start with applications that financially justify the adoption of our infrastructure. For example, the ChargeKeeper application is a starting point that enables North Shore-LIJ to introduce and manage a large number of additional mobile applications."
